Guest post #poetry

Many, many thanks to Lorraine for hosting me as a guest on her blog.

My name is Jenni Wyn Hyatt and I was in my late sixties before I began to write poetry. I used to submit regularly to the Flash 500 Humour Verse competition and was absolutely amazed when the first poem I ever submitted was long-listed.

After that, I was long or short-listed on several occasions and finally ‘made the big time’ when my poem ‘Poor Old Aitch’ was placed second, shortly before the competition ended. Imagine my awe and sense of achievement when I regularly saw my name listed alongside those of well-known writers of humorous verse!

It was this success, along with the publication of some of my serious poems in magazines for traditional verse such as The Lyric and The Road Not Taken, a Journal of Formal Verse, which made me realise that perhaps I could write poems that people would want to read.

This led, eventually, to my publishing a small collection of poems through Rowanvale Press, of Cardiff. The collection is entitled Perhaps One Day and contains all the poems I submitted to the Humour Verse Competition plus a number of serious poems.

My subjects include childhood memories, Wales (my homeland), war, social commentary and nature as well as accounts of my personal life, both poignant and humorous.

Most of the poems are written using rhyme and metre and some in recognised poetic forms such as the villanelle, sonnet, triolet etc. There are also occasional pieces of free verse. All the poems, however, are clear and are accessible to poets and non-poets alike.

Perhaps One Day is priced at £5.99 and is available from Amazon, also from the website of Rowanvale Books using the following link: http://www.rowanvalebooks.com/book/perhaps-one-day

Flash 500 Long Lists Announced

Long lists
The long lists are up for the first quarter 2013. You can find the titles of the flash fiction long list here and the titles of the humour verse long list here.

New Competition for Novelists Soon to Open for Entries
Are you writing a novel? Here's some news you might find interesting. We are going to launch a Novel Opening Chapters category to add to our site. Unlike the flash fiction and humour verse, this will NOT be run on a quarterly basis, but will be an annual competition with a six month entry period, opening on the first of May and closing at the end of October each year. Prize money, judge and rules will appear on the website shortly. Watch your inboxes for the next newsletter, which will contain more information.

Use of Song Lyrics
You might be tempted to enrich your entries by use of song lyrics. Even if you feel the words are exactly what your story needs, I cannot advise against this strongly enough. Unless you have the copyright holder's permission to use the lyrics you could find yourself in a financial nightmare. If you really want to incorporate the lyrics, track down the copyright holder and ask for a licence to reproduce the words - but do bear in mind that even if you win the top prize in any competition, you might still find yourself out of pocket. On the other hand, titles are not subject to copyright, so can be copied without asking for permission from anyone.

New Entries on Resource Page
Our page of useful sites for writers has been updated. There are many links listed which could be of benefit, regardless of whether you write prose or poetry. Don't forget to share this page with your writing friends: Writers' Resources

Now 32 Lines in Place of 30
Our humour verse competition has been extended to 32 lines in place of the previous limit of 30. This is in response to many emails received on the subject. I hope the extra two lines makes life easier for our funny poets.

For all of you who have made the first quarter 2013 long lists, congratulations and good luck with the next stage of judging.

If you missed out this time, here’s hoping you make it through in one of the other quarters this year. Both categories are now open for entries. For more information on everything to do with both competitions, visit the websites: Flash 500 Flash Fiction and Flash 500 Humour Verse Competition.

Final reminder that the Flash 500 fiction and humour verse competitions close tomorrow, Saturday 30th June, at midnight (UK time). You only have a day and a half to get your stories and poems in. Good luck to everyone who enters.

Long Lists for Flash Fiction and Humour Verse Competitions

The long list is up ...
... on the Flash 500 winners’ page. These stories are now being whittled down to create the shortlist. Once again, we had an incredible batch of entries – with stories arriving from no fewer than 40 countries. If you fancy entering this quarter, the details of the competition can be found on the Flash 500 website.

And the humour verse long list has also been decided
I’m delighted to say that I've been presented with the long list for the humour verse competition and you can see which poems made it here on the humour verse winning entries page. It's now up to me to choose ten of these poems to make the shortlist and from there pick the winners. From what I've been told by the primary readers, the standard was extremely high and I'm going to have my work cut out.

For this competition the entries also arrived from far and wide. Poems came in from Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore,Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.

The brief is for humour verse up to 30 lines in length, so if you feel like entering this quarter, more details can be found on the Humour Verse Competition Website.

Judge for third quarter 2011
I'm delighted to say that our first ever judge has returned to preside over the next quarter. You can find out more about Simon Whaley on his judge's page.

Resource page
A few more links have been added to the writers’ Resource Page since the last newsletter. Once again, if you feel a site should be on the list, but isn’t, let me know and, if it fits one of the categories, I’ll add it. Send details to: info@flash500.com Please pass the Resource Page link on to all the writers you know.

Phew! That’s all for now, other than to say I'm really looking forward to having a chuckle reading the twenty-five poems that have made the long list.

Best wishes until the next newsletter when the shortlist will be announced,

Lorraine
