This week’s Friday
Fiction Feature is Son of Secrets by N
J Simmonds
Thank you, Lorraine,
for featuring me today! Son of Secrets is the second book of my
sweeping fantasy trilogy ‘The Indigo Chronicles’. Set in London and Spain it
spans two thousand years of past lives, romance and adventure. For fans of The
Time Travellers Wife, The Da Vinci Code and Outlander, my series is about two
star-crossed lovers who have to fight fate to be together…but with an esoteric
twist.
When Ella meets Zac in
the first book, The Path Keeper, she
knows there’s something different about him. As the book continues, we realise
Zac isn’t your average guy, in fact he’s met Ella before. More than once…and in
more than one lifetime. Son of Secrets
(which was released 28th May 2020) jumps ahead three years after The Path Keeper, and we see a bereft
Ella struggling to cope and unsure whether Zac will ever return to her. It was
important to me, after putting Ella through so much in book one, that we see
the effects of that. It was also interesting to see Zac’s physical and emotional
transformation, and observe how the couple fought their own demons in order to
fight their destiny. Will Zac do the right thing and leave the only woman he’s
ever loved in the arms of fate? Or will he listen to his heart and risk
everything to get her back?
Be warned - this series
takes readers to some very dark places. Although Son of Secrets is predominantly a love story set against the
backdrop of humanity’s battle against fate and destiny, the themes of
belonging, family and injustice are also present in both the main storyline and
every character’s own struggle. There are also past life flashbacks to Tuscany
5BC, and the Dutch witch hunts of 1613 – it’s not for the faint of heart.
And then there’s Luci.
Hinted at in book one, Zac’s mother is a character you don’t often see in
literature…and you definitely don’t forget in a hurry.
‘Never mistake a strong
woman for an evil one,’ Luci says to Ella’s step-brother, Sebastian. But is
Luci just a femme fatale and a woman scorned? Or is she every mother who has
had her child taken from her and will do anything to get them back – even if it
takes two millennia?
With Luci you see the
struggles of women across the ages. Through a series of flashbacks, and her
involvement in Zac’s life and Ella’s past lives, we see a woman who has
suffered. If you were both immortal and invincible, how far would you go to get
your revenge?
But Son of Secrets isn’t all darkness. It’s
a love story with more than one love interest. It’s a twist on pre-ordained
beliefs and truths we should all question, and it’s a fantastical ride through
history.
I really do hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it. The third book in the series, CHILDREN OF SHADOWS, is out May 2021.
